Position Summary:
Financial Assistance Coordinators are responsible for providing the patient with a positive experience by helping them understand potential insurance coverage for which they could be eligible. Financial Assistance Coordinators are the patients, UNMH Revenue Cycle and clinic teams point of contact for financial assistance questions and application process. The Financial Assistance Coordinator is also able to set up payment plans and assist with billing questions when working in collaboration with Customer Service. Ensure adherence to Hospital sand departmental policies and procedures. No patient care assignment.
Detailed responsibilities:
* Coordinate and serve as point of contact all financial assistance related questions for the patient. Communicate with patients to identify and understand financial histories and all relevant patient information Coordinate and serve as point of contact all financial assistance related questions for the patient. * Gather and Research all relevant information required via interview to process financial assistance requests such as application history and what the patient currently owes. Document all communication in the Financial Assistance Application
* Assessing patient eligibility for Medical Assistance, Emergency Medical Assistance, Community Programs, and Government Programs: a. Assess and offer payment alternatives which may include applying for UNMH’s financial assistance program, alternative county programs, or receiving care closer to home. b. Have a full understanding of EMSNC (Emergency Medical Services for Non-Citizens, NM Insurance Pool, Medicaid, Medicare and other grants offered at UNMH as coverage may apply to the patients they serve. c. Must be certified in NM Insurance Exchange program
* Work to eliminate barriers to access financial coverage or charity care by working with patient and community agencies for documentation needs
* Assess the current financial situation of patients through the verification of patient insurance benefits; serving as the technical expert in confirming patient’s eligibility for charity care programs by calculating their Federal Poverty Level (FPL) percentage: a. determine the patient’s financial ability to pay and explain charity care program and benefits to the patient b. Initiate the financial screening process as appropriate to evaluate eligibility for assistance programs. Assist the patient in gathering supporting financial documentation
* After determination of eligibility update Cerner and Soarian systems to reflect appropriate coverage and remove non applicable coverage
* Communicate financial coverage status and applicable financial decisions with all appropriate parties: patient and/or family
* Explain UNMH’s payment policy to patients if a program is not available
* Document all patient encounters and those made on behalf of patients; complete and submit billing documentation as appropriate; maintain current and comprehensive client files. Files may contain documents held for safe keeping on behalf of a client
* COMMUNICATION - Handle patient inquiries, complaints and customer service issues by phone, in person or via the email; research and resolve the issue
* CUSTOMER RELATIONS - Establish and maintain good rapport and effective working relationships with patients, visitors, physicians and Hospitals employees

* Health Exchange Cert within 18 months
Physical Conditions:
Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally (Occasionally: activity or condition exists up to 1/3 of the time) and/or a negligible amount of force frequently (Frequently: activity or condition exists from 1/3 to 2/3 of the time) to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
