Grenada house fire kills child, injures two By The Associated Press GRENADA, Miss. A 3-yearold child was killed and two other children suffered burns Monday night when fire heavily damaged a house in Grenada, authorities said. Firemen said eight people apparently were asleep in the house when the blaze started, and that at one point neighbors feared two children had been trapped inside the house. Authorities said it appeared that in the confusion that oc- State advises customers of Rouse, Country Club systems to boil water By TOM CHARLIER Staff Writer State health officials have advised about 110 utility customers in northeast Jackson and northern Forrest counties to boll their water after laboratory tests Monday showed high levels of bacteria in the systems.

Water samples from the Rouse Water Co. system, which serves 70 customers northeast of Vancleave, and the Country Club Lake Estates North system, which serves 40 customers northwest of Hattiesburg, contained fecal-coliform bacteria levels as high as 80 times the federal standards, said health department spokesman Nancy Kay Sullivan. Coliform itself is harmless, but it is an indicator of the possible presence of disease-causing organisms which can lead to such ailments as typhoid, cholera and hepatitis. The Rouse and Country Club systems, both based in Vicksburg, are among eight water companies named in suits filed by the health department in Jackson County Chancery Court in January. The suits, which seek civil damages totaling about $5 million, charge that the companies submitted to the health department water samples which were "not representative of the water to the utilities' tomers.

The samples, according to the suit, "were obtained from sources other than water from the defendant's water system." Sullivan said that the department has been closely monitoring the eight systems since evidence of possible problems first turned up. She said only the Rouse and Country Club Lake Estates systems have exceeded the maximum coliform level of 1 colony per 100 milliliters of water. A coliform level of 80 colonies per 100 ml. was detected in the Rouse system, while colonies were shown in the Country Club Estates water. Sullivan said the sanitarians in Jackson and Forrest counties will be taking daily samples from the two systems until health officials decide to grant the utilities safe water certificates.

Ethics panel drops lease complaint against Molpus By The Associated Press JACKSON, Miss. State Ethics Commission officials said today the agency has dismissed a complaint filed against Secretary of State Dick Molpus to challenge his handling of 16th Section land leases. Commission Director Ron Crowe said that members had voted unanimously to reject the complaint of a group of South Mississippi leaseholders and supporters. The complaint filed by Steve Turney of Marion County and 56 other people charged that Molpus was requiring an annual rental of 5 percent of fair market value, was permitting local boards of education to charge an application fee for leases, and was not following prescribed leasing procedures, all in violation of the law. But the commission found the 5-percent figure was being used only as a guide in trying to determine whether lease prices were fair, and that Molpus, by virtue of his office, had an obligation to see that local schools obtain a fair price for their school lands, Crowe said.

He noted that some of the individual complainants had leases for 20 cents an acre or less. The complaint also alleged a conflict of interest on Molpus' part in supporting legislation that would have permitted corporate leasing of 16th Section timber lands. Crowe said that while Leon McKee, general manager and majority stockholder of Molpus Forest Products did submit a bid, it was approved by the Neshoba County Board of Education before going to the Forestry Commission. "There are no timber contracts negotiated by, approved by, nor reviewed by the office of secretary of state, and no violation of the conflict-of-Interest provisions was found to have been committed by Secretary of State Dick Molpus," Crowe said. The findings were reported in a letter to Molpus, who waived the confidentiality that normally surrounds unsuccessful complaints.

Hanco*ck County students to attend Saturday classes By NAN PATTON EHRBRIGHT Bay Bureau BAY ST. LOUIS Students in Hanco*ck County's two school districts will attend Saturday classes to help make up for days lost due to the recent teacher strike. School boards in both districts also agreed to extend school calendars to meet the 175- day school year required by law. In. the Bay-Waveland city schools, students will attend 60- percent school days on March 30, April 13, April 20 and May 18.

Classes will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on those Saturdays. The last school day will be June 13 for students and June 14 for teachers. High school graduation has been re-scheduled for June 7.

Superintendent J.D. Cullouch said the board tried to be fair in re-setting the calendar. "Some wanted all Saturdays, some wanted all extended days," he said. "There is no best way to recommend a calendar because of so many problems involved." In the county school district, students at Hanco*ck North Central will attend 60-percent days, from 8:15 a.m. to 1:10 p.m., on March 30, April 13 and April 20.
